Mindful Consumerism: Rethinking Freebies and Packaging from Small Shops

Lately, I’ve noticed a growing trend regarding freebies and packaging from small shops. Have you noticed it too? I’ve seen so many “pack an order with me” or unboxing videos with countless freebies and excessive packaging – I actually don’t think I’ve seen a single one that didn’t throw in stickers and multiple sheets of tissue paper. While these extras are often meant to delight customers and foster loyalty, I can’t help but feel a pang of concern when it comes to sustainability and mindful consumerism.

Sustainability isn’t just a buzzword for me—it’s a core value. I’m committed to keeping mindful consumerism at the forefront of my business, which means being thoughtful about every aspect of my shop, including the packaging and freebies I offer. Beautiful packaging with tons of tissue paper and physical freebies, like stickers or trinkets, might seem like a nice gesture, but too often these items end up as clutter or, worse, in the trash. I want to avoid contributing to this cycle of waste.

Why don’t we expect freebies and beautiful packaging from big box stores?

Here’s something to consider: we rarely expect freebies from big box stores. Think about it—when was the last time you received a sticker or an extra gift alongside your grocery run? What about when you bought that new sweater from the big department store? Probably never.

Yet, when it comes to small businesses, there’s a growing cultural pressure for shop owners to include these extras in every purchase. This expectation often comes from the desire for a more personalized shopping experience, but it places stress on small shop owners. Unlike big corporations, small businesses budgets aren’t able to absorb the cost of free items and excessively beautiful packaging, nor do they produce at the same volume. Every extra item—no matter how small—requires time, money, and resources.

If we wouldn’t expect a freebie from a major retailer, why should we impose this pressure for freebies and packaging from small shops – the very entrepreneurs we claim to support? Small businesses rely on loyal customers to keep their doors open, and they deserve the space to focus on creating meaningful, high-quality products without creating an unnecessarily large overhead.

As for my packaging? I’m sticking with recyclable and biodegradable materials polymailers and tapes.

And for some whimsy, would you all be opposed to yarn scraps instead of packing peanuts?
