How to Shop for Sustainable Crochet Products: Green and Red Flags to Look for

Crochet is more than just a craft—it’s a way to connect with slow, mindful creation. But not all crochet shops are the same when it comes to sustainability. As a conscious shopper, you can make choices that align with your values and support businesses that prioritize eco-friendly practices. Here are the green and red flags to look for when you’re wanting to shop for sustainable crochet items.

1. Ethically Sourced Materials: What’s Behind the Yarn?

The materials used in crochet pieces tell a story—not just of their beauty but of their impact on the planet. Here’s what to look for:

Red Flags to beware when you shop for sustainable crochet: Synthetic Yarns

Synthetic yarns (like acrylic or polyester) are derived from petroleum using very energy-intensive processes and release microplastics into waterways when washed. These materials take centuries to break down. While they may be budget-friendly and come in a variety of colors, their long-term environmental impact makes them the least sustainable choice.

Orange Flag: Recycled Synthetic Yarns

Still bad! But at least they’re recycled, which means that those materials will be kept out of a landfill for a little while longer. These do however, still leech microplastics so they’re damaging the environment every time you wash them.

Yellow Flag: Natural Yarns

Natural fibers, such as cotton, wool, and bamboo, are a more sustainable option compared to synthetic yarns. These fibers are biodegradable, renewable, and can be less harmful to the environment if sourced responsibly. However, it’s important to note that not all natural fibers are created equal—conventional cotton, for example, requires large amounts of water and pesticides to grow.

Green Flag: Ethically Sourced Natural Fibers

The gold standard for eco-friendly crochet is using ethically sourced, organic, or recycled natural fibers. Look for yarns labeled as organic, fair-trade, or eco-certified. Brands that prioritize sustainability often use organic farming practices, pay fair wages to their workers, and ensure minimal environmental impact. Examples include yarns made from recycled cotton or wool, or bamboo yarns grown using environmentally sound processes.

When a shop shares the story behind its yarn—whether it’s recycled cotton or ethically treated sheep’s wool—it’s a great sign that they care about sustainability.

Step 2: Minimize Waste

Just because a shop isn’t strictly using natural fibers doesn’t mean that all hope is lost, however! Crochet is inherently a zero-waste process — you create only what you need, stitch by stitch. But a thoughtful crochet shop goes beyond using sustainable yarns; they also minimize waste during their crafting process. Here’s what to ask about or look out for:

Green Flags when you shop for sustainable crochet: Reduce Waste

Do they mention using scraps creatively? Look for products like colorful scrap-project blankets or ornaments made from yarn remnants. These not only reduce waste but also create unique, one-of-a-kind pieces.

They might also mention using yarn scraps for stuffing or even in their packaging!

Green Flag: Recycle

Shops that repurpose materials, such as unraveling old sweaters for new yarn, show a commitment to giving resources a second life.

Every bit of effort to minimize waste means a smaller environmental footprint and a more thoughtful product. Here at Cozy Daisy Stitchery, I  believe in making every bit of yarn count. Whether through upcycling or scrap projects, reducing waste is an essential part of crafting with sustainability in mind.

Step 3: Use Crochet to Develop Sustainable Habits

Crochet isn’t just about making beautiful items; it can also inspire more sustainable practices in other areas of your life. When checking out a new shop, take a peek at their product lineup. Do they offer items that reduce single-use waste in your home? By replacing single-use or disposable products with reusable crochet alternatives, you can reduce your household waste and promote a more eco-friendly lifestyle so shops that offer these types of products are showing an interest in sustainable living.

Examples of Sustainable Crochet Items

  • Crochet Face Scrubbies: Instead of relying on disposable cotton pads or makeup wipes, you can crochet reusable face scrubbies from soft, natural fibers like cotton. These scrubbies are machine washable and can be used over and over again, reducing the amount of waste in your bathroom routine.
  • Crochet Water Balloons: Replacing traditional water balloons with crochet water balloons is a fun, eco-friendly alternative. These reusable balloons can be soaked in water, thrown, and then dried for future use, eliminating the waste of single-use plastic balloons that are harmful to the environment.
  • Reusable Grocery Bags: Crochet grocery bags or produce bags are another way to reduce your reliance on plastic. These durable, reusable bags can be made from organic cotton or other sturdy fibers, making them an eco-friendly staple for any shopping trip.

By incorporating these sustainable crochet items into your daily life, you not only reduce waste but also foster a mindset of mindfulness and intention in how you live.

4. Transparent Values: Sustainability in Action

Look for shops that clearly share their sustainability practices and values.

Green Flag: Do they highlight their use of recycled or responsibly sourced materials?

This will likely be under an About Us page or perhaps under specific item descriptions in their shop. They might go into a short explanation about why they chose that material (like I do here), or they might simply mention that it is eco-friendly.

They might also use eco-friendly packaging. My mailers, for example, are recyclable and break down in 24 months so you know they won’t be sitting in a landfill for the next hundred years.

Green Flag: Do they discuss their commitment to eco-conscious practices?

Do they discuss engaging in practices such as reducing packaging waste or donating to environmental causes? Maybe they sell digital products and make a point of saying you won’t receive a physical copy to cut down on shipping and waste?

Transparency shows that a shop is genuinely dedicated to sustainability, not just following a trend.

Red Flag: Do they just throw around the word sustainability without any details?

Just like companies explode a rainbow on their website for the month of June and then ignore or even actively harm the lgbtq population the rest of the year (it’s called pinkwashing or rainbowwashing) many companies greenwash in their marketing as well. They may throw around the words “sustainability” or “eco-friendly” without actually doing anything sustainably. Don’t fall for their marketing!

Why It Matters: A Small Purchase with a Big Impact

Crochet cannot be replicated by machine, it can only be handmade. Therefore, every crochet item you buy supports a person that has invested time and care into their craft. When you choose a shop that prioritizes sustainability, you’re not only getting a beautiful, handmade piece—you’re also helping to support ethical practices, reduce waste, and care for the planet.

I believe handmade items should be as kind to the earth as they are to the people who use them. With every stitch, I aim to create something that’s meaningful, mindful, and sustainable. By looking for these green flags, you can feel good knowing your purchases align with your values.

When you shop for sustainable crochet or other handmade treasures, you’re doing more than buying a product—you’re investing in a better future. Together, small choices lead to big change. Happy shopping!
